AI Tools for HR in 2026: What Actually Works — and What’s Actually Free

Hamza Nasim 5 min read

Most “AI for HR” roundups are written by vendors selling one of the tools. We run a directory of 1,594 AI tools, verify pricing by hand, and don’t sell HR software. Here’s the honest map.

Search for AI tools for HR and you’ll hit two walls at once. First, the listicles are vendor content — the company writing the “top 10” is always #1. Second, and stranger: nearly half of what markets itself as “HR AI” isn’t for HR at all. In our own Human Resources category, roughly half the tools serve candidates — resume tailors, cover-letter generators, interview-prep bots — not the people running recruiting, onboarding, or people ops.

That confusion isn’t cosmetic. It means an HR manager evaluating “HR AI” is wading through tools built to beat her own screening process. So this guide does two things: maps the tools that actually serve HR teams, job by job — and tells you what the candidate-side arsenal looks like, because you’re on the receiving end of it either way.

One pricing pattern to know before we start, straight from our verified-pricing dataset: HR AI has a missing middle. Candidate-side tools cost $3–$30 a month with prices on the page. HR-team platforms overwhelmingly don’t publish pricing at all — it’s demos and sales calls. Almost nothing sits in between, which is exactly where most small HR teams are shopping. Where a tool publishes a real price, we say so below; where it’s contact-sales, we say that too.

Recruiting and sourcing

Ashby has become the ATS of choice for startups that want analytics and AI screening built in rather than bolted on — scheduling, sourcing, and reporting in one system. Contact-sales pricing.

Paradox is the conversational-AI recruiter (“Olivia”) that handles screening, scheduling, and candidate Q&A over chat and SMS. It’s built for high-volume hourly hiring — think hundreds of applicants per req — and it’s enterprise, contact-sales.

Turbohire covers structured recruiting automation — screening, ranking, interview coordination — at mid-market scale, and has run freemium tiers historically.

Screening and interviewing

HireVue is the incumbent in AI-assisted video interviewing and assessments. It’s also the tool your legal team will have questions about — AI interview scoring is under active regulatory scrutiny in several US states and the EU. Use it with structured, validated criteria or not at all. Enterprise, contact-sales.

Honest note: this is the category where “AI” claims run furthest ahead of evidence. If a vendor can’t explain what their score measures and how it was validated, that’s your answer.

Employee support and the HR helpdesk

The most quietly successful HR AI category: agents that answer “how much PTO do I have?” so your team doesn’t.

Moveworks is the enterprise leader — an AI assistant that resolves IT and HR requests inside Slack and Teams. Leena AI is the HR-first equivalent, strong on policy Q&A and onboarding flows. Kore.ai sells the build-your-own-agent platform version. All three: contact-sales.

Qatalog deserves a mention for smaller teams — an AI work hub that answers questions across your company’s tools, and one of the few in this section with published pricing (from $9/month, verified).

People ops and performance

Lattice — the performance-and-engagement platform — has been shipping AI features across reviews, one-on-ones, and engagement analysis, and is one of the few HR-team platforms that publishes per-seat pricing (from $11/seat/month, verified, with a $4,000/year minimum). If you already run reviews in it, the AI layer arrives where your data already lives.

Wave AI takes a different slice: AI-assisted leadership coaching at $99/month (verified) — a fraction of human executive coaching, with the obvious caveats about what a model can and can’t coach.

HR writing: job descriptions, policies, comms

Textio built the category of augmented writing for hiring — bias detection and language optimization in job posts and feedback. It’s the specialist play; the generalist play is using the writing assistant you already pay for. Our Writing category has the full roster if you’d rather go general-purpose.

The candidate-side aisle (know what you’re up against)

Those tools flooding our HR category? Your applicants are using them. Jobscan (from $30/month, verified) reverse-engineers ATS keyword filters and tells candidates exactly how to beat them. Rezi (from $3/month, verified) generates ATS-optimized resumes at scale.

The practical takeaway for HR isn’t outrage — it’s that keyword-filter screening is now a solved game for candidates, and if your pipeline still leans on it, you’re selecting for AI adoption, not job fit. Structured interviews and work samples got more valuable the day these tools got good.

So what’s actually free?

The honest answer to “free AI tools for HR”: almost none of the genuinely free tools are for HR teams. The free tier lives almost entirely on the candidate side, because that’s a consumer market. For HR-team tools, “free” means freemium on-ramps — Qatalog and Turbohire have real ones — or free trials with a sales call at the end.

Two rules from our pricing re-verification work: treat any listed price as a hypothesis until you’ve seen the checkout page (annual-billing games are endemic), and treat “contact sales” as a signal the price scales with your headcount — budget accordingly.

The bottom line

  • Small team, first AI hire: start at the helpdesk layer (Qatalog) or your existing platform’s AI features (Lattice if you’re on it) — not a new enterprise contract.
  • High-volume hiring: Paradox and Turbohire are built for exactly that.
  • Enterprise: Moveworks or Leena AI for support; HireVue only with legal in the room.
  • Everyone: assume candidates are AI-equipped. Screen accordingly.

We keep the full, continuously-verified list in our Human Resources category — every tool health-checked, dead ones removed weekly.
