The Real Price of AI: What 150 Tools Actually Cost

How much does an AI tool cost? Most answers are a shrug. So rather than guess — or trust a directory's stale numbers — we pulled up the live pricing pages of 150 randomly chosen paid AI tools in July 2026 and read the current price off each one. Here's what AI actually costs.

The one-number answer: $15 a month

The median AI tool with a paid plan starts at $15/month. Not $15 buried in an annual contract — $15 month-to-month, the price you actually pay to get started. Half of all paid tools cost less than that.

But most AI tools are free to start

Before you even hit a paywall: across the full 1,562-tool directory, 64% of AI tools offer a genuinely free way in — 32% freemium, 32% fully free. Only 12% are paid-only, with no free tier or trial at all. “AI is expensive” is mostly a myth; “AI wants your email” is closer to the truth.

The price ladder

Among the tools that do charge, here's the shape of it:

  • Entry (25th percentile): $9.71/mo — the floor for a real paid plan
  • Median: $15/mo — the typical starting price
  • Premium (75th percentile): $29/mo — where “Pro” plans land

The most common band is $10–20/month (36 of 116 priced tools), followed closely by $20–50 (33 tools). Roughly 6 in 10 paid AI tools start somewhere between $5 and $30.

The expensive ones are rarer than you think

Averages mislead here. Our sample's mean is $63/month — but that's dragged up by a handful of enterprise outliers (an AI coding platform at $2,700/mo, a workflow tool at $999). Only 8 of 116 priced tools cost more than $100/month. Prices ran from $0.27 (pay-as-you-go compute) all the way to $2,700 (enterprise) — but strip out the top end and the picture is clear: AI tooling is cheap, and the median barely moves.

Why we re-checked everything — and what we found

Most “AI pricing” data is scraped once and left to rot, and AI pricing moves fast. When we re-verified our own numbers against live pages, only about a quarter still matched. Some tools had raised prices, some had cut them, some had switched to annual-only billing, and several had quietly stored the discounted “billed annually” rate and passed it off as monthly. About 5% of the tools we checked were dead or had pivoted to something else entirely. Every figure here is the current, month-to-month, USD price read off each tool's own pricing page in July 2026 — 92% of the sample was confirmable this way.

The takeaway

If you're budgeting for AI: assume you can try almost anything free, expect to pay around $15/month per tool once you commit, and treat anything over $50 as a specialist or enterprise product. The sticker shock isn't the price of any one tool — it's how quickly a stack of $15 subscriptions adds up. Browse the full directory, or see where these tools cluster in the most crowded corners of AI and how they name themselves in the .ai gold rush.

Method & caveats

We took a random sample of 150 paid-tier tools from the toolhunter.ai directory and verified each against its official pricing page in July 2026. “Entry price” = the cheapest paid plan billed month-to-month, in USD (annual-only plans converted to an effective monthly rate; non-USD converted at prevailing rates). Dollar figures reflect the 116 tools with a confirmable current price; free-only, contact-only, and unverifiable tools are excluded from those. The free-vs-paid split reflects all 1,562 tools by their listed pricing model. We re-verify continuously, so expect these to move.
